AutoSurvey

AI follow-up question · Bounded

A short answer gets one more question. Never a long chat.

When a respondent writes a short or vague answer to an open-text question, the survey can ask one more question about that answer. Einstein writes the question, and AutoSurvey checks it before the respondent sees it. The respondent can skip it.

Off by default. An admin turns it on, then the author turns it on for each open-text question.

An answer like "bus was late" tells you little. A good follow-up asks which stop and how long the wait was. AutoSurvey asks that question during the survey, while the respondent remembers.

A fixed word rule decides when to ask, not AI. An answer of 5 words or fewer is short. An answer of 25 words or more gets no follow-up. A "nothing to add" answer stops the follow-ups. The respondent's reply is saved as an answer row in your Salesforce org, with the question that the respondent saw.

Bounded by fixed limits.

At most 3 follow-ups per response, and 1 or 2 per question. At most 6 AI calls per response. Each survey has a monthly budget of AI follow-ups.

Checked before it shows.

The AI question must be one question of 200 characters or fewer. It must not start with "Why". It must not ask for a name, email, phone number, address or link.

A list question when AI cannot help.

You write a follow-up question for each kind of answer. AutoSurvey shows it when AI is too slow, fails, breaks a rule, or the budget is used.

The screens

These are design mockups. They use sample data for a fictional transit company. Some labels on the mockups differ from the labels in the product.

Mockup of the AI follow-up questions card in Setup Home, under Let AI read answers
Mockup. Not a working product screen. In Setup Home, the "AI follow-up questions" card. It is locked until "Let AI read answers" is On. It starts Off.
Mockup of the first survey screen with a notice that the survey may ask an AI follow-up question
Mockup. Not a working product screen. The first screen tells the respondent that the survey may ask an AI follow-up question. The respondent can opt out of all follow-ups.
Mockup of an AI follow-up question after the short answer bus was late
Mockup. Not a working product screen. After a short answer, one follow-up question with the label "AI follow-up". The respondent can skip it.

What it does, and what it does not do

What the follow-up does

  • Asks one more question after a short, vague, negative or positive answer to a Text or Long Text question.
  • Can also ask after a low NPS score (0 to 6) on a question that you pick.
  • Sends to AI only the question text, this one answer (up to 2,000 characters) and the topics never to ask about.
  • Lets you set topics that the follow-up must never ask about.
  • Tells every respondent on the first screen. The admin cannot remove this notice.
  • Saves the reply as an answer in your org, with the question text that the respondent saw, and marks it as answered or skipped.
  • Shows a results tile: Asked, Answered, Skipped, "Left the survey on a follow-up", written by AI or from your list, and AI follow-ups this month.

What it does not do

  • It does not send answers to any AI provider other than Einstein. AutoSurvey refuses any other model for this feature.
  • It does not start a conversation. The limits are fixed per question and per response.
  • It does not ask when the survey has an encrypted question, is marked sensitive, or the respondent opted out.
  • It does not ask after Email, Phone, URL or File Upload questions.
  • It does not read the meaning of an answer in every language. The negative, positive and vague word lists are English only. Other languages get the short answer rule only.
  • It does not put answer text in logs or usage records.

Who can use it

An admin turns on "Let AI read answers" with an Einstein model, then turns on "AI follow-up questions" in Setup Home. The author turns on "Ask follow-ups" for each open-text question. If "Let AI read answers" goes Off, follow-ups stop. They come back when it goes On again.

Open-text question

A question where the respondent types an answer. In AutoSurvey, Text or Long Text.

Einstein

The AI in Salesforce. Your org must have an Einstein model for this feature.

Monthly budget

The maximum number of AI follow-ups for one survey in one month. The default is 500. After that, the survey uses your list question.
